- REGISTERING DESKTOP DELETER AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
- ======================================================
- Desktop Deleter is not free. Sites using this software in business MUST
- register it. Contact the author for site licensing information. If it is for
- personal use only, please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the
- following.
-
- 7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
- I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
- I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
- register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
- an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
- deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
- like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.
-
- See the documentation which should accompany this file for more information
- on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should also accompany this file.
- Please use it to register the software.
-
- USING DESKTOP DELETER
- ======================
- • If you use Desktop Deleter, please please please send me a note. My addresses
- (post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”.
-
- What Does Desktop Deleter Do?
- ----------------------------
- • Desktop Deleter is a souped-up version of reCoverUP.
-
- • Desktop Deleter allows you to select and delete different types of desktop
- database files from your hard drive. It also allows you to delete old-style
- and foreign disk database files. Since System 7 does not use the old-style
- Desktop files, you can free a large amount of space from your disks by
- deleting it.
-
- • To recover files lost due to the 7 TuneUp bug, you must somehow delete the
- Desktop Database files. Desktop Deleter, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Box),
- automates the procedure. Just drag the disks containing the corrupt Desktop
- files over the application icon and the process will be completed for you
- automatically.
-
- • Desktop Deleter will probably NOT totally fix your “file disappearance” problems.
- What it will do is make the problems fixable with a disk repair utility. The
- key to fixing the disk is to delete and rebuild your desktop. Unless you do this,
- the disk is irreparable by disk repair utilities.
-
- Using Desktop Deleter
- --------------------
- • Drag the disks containing the corrupt Desktop files over the application icon
- and they will be deleted.
-
- • You should always restart your machine after deleting the Desktop files.
- If you decide to quit back to the Finder instead, all icons will be generic,
- except for items which have custom icons. Holding down the option-command
- keys when you quit is not good enough. For some reason, the icons are still
- generic, even after a rebuild, and the Desktop is rebuilt AGAIN after you
- restart your machine. If you modify a non-system disk, replacing the old-
- style Desktop file, remember to force a Desktop rebuild by holding down
- the option-command key sequence. Your Desktop Database should be rebuilt
- automatically after the restart, but you should hold down the option-
- command sequence, just to be sure. If you don’t get the alert asking you
- if you’re sure you want to rebuild the Desktop, you know it was rebuilt
- automatically. If you delete only the Desktop and Foreign Desktop files,
- it is not necessary for you to reboot your machine. Only deleting the disk’s
- Desktop Database files requires that you rebuild your desktop.
-
- • Double-click on Desktop Deleter to modify the preferences and see the about
- box information.
-
- • To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Items already processed
- will remain modified.
-
- Preferences
- -----------
- • The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the preferences
- dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct parameters have been
- set up. You can modify these if you wish. If you don't want to see that
- window again, just say OK. You will have to explicitly ask for for the
- Preferences window the next time you wish to change anything.
-
- • The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can choose to show an
- alert before modifying anything. You can also choose to restart the
- machine after modifying the disks. See the previous section for very
- important information on restarting. Old-style Desktop files are those
- created by versions 6.0.X and earlier. They are also created on non-system
- disks with System 7.0. It is not always necessary to delete these Desktop
- files, but you can often free up a lot of disk space by doing so. Foreign
- desktop files are any other DF and DB files present on the root directory of
- your disk. A separate Database file is sometimes created for other media.
- Be careful, though. If you have this option selected, any files on the root
- directory of your disk which end in ‘ DB’ or ‘ DF’ will be deleted. Delete
- the disk’s database files to rebuild your desktop from scratch. (The normal
- rebuilding process retains some old information). This also is a healing
- process for the file disappearance bug.
-
- • To show the Preferences dialog on-the-fly in Drop Box mode, hold down the
- option key while the program is launching.
-
- • To override the Show alert preference, hold down the shift key when the
- program is launching (or after you close the Preferences dialog).
